Guidelines for Victims: What to Do If You've Been Scammed
Realized you sent money to a fraudster? Time is critical. Follow these immediate steps to secure your accounts and report the incident.
1. Contact Your Bank Immediately
If you made a bank transfer (FPS) or paid via debit/credit card, call your bank's fraud department right away. Ask them to raise a recall request. UK banks are signed up to the Contingent Reimbursement Model (CRM) code for authorized push payment scams.
2. Secure Your Compromised Accounts
If you entered your password or login credentials anywhere suspicious, change your email and banking passwords immediately and enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA).
3. Save All Evidence
Take screenshots of the listing, user profiles, phone numbers, chat logs, and transaction receipts. Do not delete chats or block the user yet, as your bank or law enforcement may need the message history.
